Our Commitment to Environmental Sustnability: Shifting Medical Waste into Sustnable Solutions
In the year 2022, we treated a staggering total of 680 million kilograms of medical waste, playing a crucial role in protecting public health and safety from potentially hazardous materials. We enabled our customers to divert an impressive 46 million kilograms of plastic waste away from landfills through our Bio-Systems reusable sharps contners. Additionally, our efforts helped us treat 17 million kilograms of pharmaceutical waste, ensuring that active pharmaceutical ingredients do not up in waterways.
While these achievements are commable, we understand the significance of presenting only numbers can sometimes seem overwhelming. Hence, to better illustrate our commitment towards sustnability and environmental responsibility, we're launching a new series called Spotlight on Sustnability. This series will delve into the stories behind our environmental efforts exploring what drives them, and highlighting what practical steps we are taking to become more sustnable.
In , our spotlight shines upon Energy from Waste EfW, an innovative process that transforms medical waste into valuable resources. At Stericycle, we begin by carefully segregating waste through the diligent efforts of our customers, followed by secure collection and transportation to specialized EfW facilities for treatment.
Once received at these facilities, waste is incinerated under optimal conditions ranging from minimum temperatures of 850° or 1,000° degrees deping on the specific type of waste. This process harnesses thermal energy which subsequently generates steam and hot water used to supply hospitals with heating and essential services such as laundry operations.
EfW not only tackles challenges related to energy production and landfill management but also aligns closely with broader sustnability goals while offering cost-saving benefits for our customers.
For Stericycle, embracing a sustnable approach involves reducing reliance on fossil fuels through the use of cleaner, renewable energy from waste. EfW enables us to contribute to carbon reporting schemes, facilitating our tracking of carbon footprint reductions and progress towards sustnability targets.
Moreover, by mitigating landfill expansion and minimizing methane emissions, we protect natural resources while also ensuring responsible management of medical waste that would otherwise be sent to landfills. The EfW process allows for resource recovery as a byproduct of the incineration, bottom ash and lime are at approximately 10 of their original volume.
These materials can then be repurposed or responsibly disposed of, reducing the environmental impact further. We also benefit our customers through cost savings as we no longer have to pay for waste disposal fees associated with non-EfW methods.
In future editions of this series, we will delve deeper into other sustnability initiatives at Stericycle all med at prioritizing responsible waste management while simultaneously ensuring safety and efficacy in healthcare practices.
