Southern Medical University, which is also known as the First Military Medical University of the People’s Liberation Army, was established in 1951 and was recognized as a national key university back in 1979. The institution was renamed Southern Medical University in 2004. As one of the pioneering universities in China that have been jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Education, National Health Commission, and Guangdong Province, it is considered an essential part of the High-level Universities Construction Project initiated by Guangdong Province.
The university offers education across 21 faculties providing a total of 29 undergraduate programs. Among these are seven national highlights majors as well as 23 national construction sites for first-class undergraduate majors. It enrolls students from all over China including those from the provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao. At present, it houses a total of 14,169 full-time undergraduate students, approximately 8,868 postgraduate students, and around 1,008 international students.
The Southern Medical University boasts ten first-level doctoral degree programs, eight post-doctoral research stations, and five national key disciplines. It is ranked among the top 1 in ESI worldwide for twelve of its disciplines with Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology Toxicology ranking amongst the world's top 1.
Being one of China's pilot universities that offer an eight-year medical program as well as a Excellent Medical Education Program pilot college, Southern Medical University has been recognized for its excellence. The institution has achieved national teaching achievement awards ten times. Its students in Clinical Medicine have had their pass rate consistently rank fourth among Chinese students at the best time and Traditional Chinese Medicine students' pass rates have topped three times.
The faculty comprises four members of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Engineering, along with four National Renowned Teachers, 761 doctoral supervisors and 1322 master's instructors.
With over 102 scientific research platforms at provincial, ministerial or national levels, Southern Medical University has been credited for winning two Second Prizes in National Natural Science Awards, one Second Prize in National Technological Invention, fifteen Second Prizes in National Scientific Technological Progress, and an Excellence Award in National Patent. Four of the university's scientific achievements have been selected among the 'Ten National Progresses in Science and Technology'. The Journal of Southern Medical University has received the title of Top 100 Academic Journals in China for eight consecutive years and is ranked first amongst medical universities' journals.
The institution boasts its fifteen directly-affiliated hospitals that possess twenty-five national key clinical specialties, seventy-nine provincial-level clinical specialties, and fifteen provincial medical quality control centers. Serving approximately 17 million patients annually, these hospitals have been recognized as part of the Summit in University Medicine for Guangdong Province since 2009.
Moreover, Southern Medical University has engaged in various forms of exchange and cooperation activities with educational institutions worldwide across more than twenty-one countries and regions including the United States, Russia, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Twan, Singapore, Vietnam, Pakistan, Malaysia, Thland, Cambodia, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.
