Art educator Lucinda Edinberg discusses the new exhibit in the Mitchell Gallery.
An exhibition showcasing medical science through an aesthetic lens has opened at St. John's College in Annapolis. Running until December 10, Hidden Beauty: Exploring the Aesthetics of Medical Science presents a diverse collection of images gathered from over sixty medical professionals associated with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
This collaborative project between artist Lucinda Edinberg and scientist Norman Barker highlights medical imagery for its inherent aesthetic qualities. The duo compiled these images that are typically used by healthcare practitioners to diagnose conditions, focusing on revealing both the intrinsic beauty in disease and the gravity of health challenges they represent.
One of the featured visuals depicts DNA molecules moving through thin fibers as a sequence of vivid colors - reds, yellows, blues, and greens. Another image displays bone scans revealing darker spots indicative of cancer within a skeleton. A third image provides insight into the intricate nervous system structure from the dissection of a cadaver conducted in 1888.
These images are part of an exhibition at St. John's College that captures the beauty amidst medical science, encouraging appreciation for the colors and patterns that emerge from disease manifestation while mntning sensitivity towards their often serious nature.
To delve deeper into this theme, Norman Barker will present a lecture titled Hidden Beauty: The Wonder of the Scientific Image on November 15th at 5:30 PM in the College's Conversation Room. This event is free and open to all visitors.
A Mitchell Gallery Members wine-and-cheese reception will follow the lecture.
On December 4th, tutor Matthew Holtzman will lead a book club discussion followed by an analysis of Objectivity by Lorrne Daston and Peter Galison using images from this exhibit as reference material. This event runs from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM and requires prior registration through the college.
